Interesting
A mate of mine made barley beer (without hops) years ago.
When you're crushing barley for cattle feed you get the dust taste at the back of your mouth that you struggle to get rid of. This barley beer had exactly the same effect. You'd end up putting pretty well anything in it to give it a decent flavour, not just plain barley :-[
barley brewing is an art in itself and without hops you can get a very acidic beer very quickly!

I can see why they used to add pine needles (or gunpowder) or whatever :-[
people have tried a lot of things previously! hops were a saviour (especially for transatlantic journeys with beer)
Could make an interesting addition to Battle Day, though it might pay to bring a few tents in which to sleep it all off!
The making of a beer for battle day......actually I could do that......
