Title: Hidden part of Roman road uncovered during water mains work in Northumberland

looks like it was only just under the surface over which an exiting bit of tarmac was in place so how on earth didnt it get spotted when the tarmac was first laid...?

I suspect that in a lot of areas these remote rural areas road gangs just assume that anything like that they come across is just their lucky day and don't ask questions. After all, when the road was laid there would have been all sorts of fuss and bother

yes and to the untrained eye, a series of stone cobbles is well just stone cobbles.....
