Post by: aligern on April 16, 2014, 09:10:30 AM
Looking on Wikimedia Commons for illustrations for Slingshot and came across this: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/43/Museum_of_Anatolian_Civilizations068_kopie2.jpg

Interesting to see such a short spear, thought it might be a javelin, but it appears to have a butt spike.
Do we think they a ore wearing thigh armour?Roy

Probably not? The helmet and the greaves are picked out in black; the thighs aren't, suggesting they are not armour, or at least not metal armour. I think the usual explanation is patterned leggings.

And why the "Early Hoplite Greeks" heading for these Phrygians?

Compare the other well-known frieze of Phrygian hoplite-like warriors - http://www.varchive.org/schorr/fig6.jpg (http://www.varchive.org/schorr/fig6.jpg). (I think I've got a better reference at home, but can't find it now.)

Edit: there is some discussion of the Pazarli warrior terracottas in this paper (http://www.pontos.dk/publications/books/bss-8-files/bss-8-14-summerer).
