The other place you'd find 50 gems would be a bathhouse.  It is unclear what detail they have of the site.  It mentions it is an unstratified site.  That would usually mean churned up.  I suspect, though, we are seeing a mistranslated Italian technical term.  The photos suggest good preservation.

The article uses the term "non-stratified" site.  Rather than implying churned up, as in no distinct stratification layers, it could also signify that no formal, stratification (in a statistical sampling sense) of experimental plots has been laid out over the research area.
