Interesting for sure.

St. Patrick saw them but left no description of what they looked like.  I'm not convinced by the substitute human sacrifice comment.

The human sacrifice bit does seem a stretch.  The idea of a pointed end and standing upright seems plausible but we could also be seeing an act of burying for safe keeping against the growth of Christianity, given its late date.
