yes on reflection it is but a gravel path specifically rather than just a 'dust' path caught my eye

Dust paths have a habit of turning into mud baths once it starts raining...  :(

Local news reported small items found in the canal bed; pins, broaches and a sling stone.
The archaeological team are anticipating the route will lead them to undiscovered sites
such as waterway control points, settlements, warehouses and such.
