Yeah, interesting as it goes Dave.  A bit of a curates egg all told.  It bothers me that these boys are all so sure. 

In my youth I marched the ground he talks of and for the life of me I cannot think why he thinks it was unsuitable for battle.  It really would be dependent on what sort of battle you wanted to fight.

That said it is not entirely devoid of merit so let's do it in the enquiring spirit of the Society. 

I don't know where you want to start though?  Sources might be good?
