Depends what you call money, I suppose.  I can't really see a thriving money economy down the fish market based on 60lb small change.  But if you say standard units of exchange for barter, maybe.

Looking around a bit, it seems copper ingots were used as money around the Aegean before the invention of true money, according to this article.

I think the normal interpretation would be raw material. It doesn't say how big these are but later bronze age ones would be hard to carry round.

I think one of you needs to write a Slingshot article on this subject.  Something along the lines of how film makers never let the truth get in the way of a good story.  I remember Slingshot 196 contained a wonderful demolition job on Braveheart.  So, it is about time Eisenstein received the same treatment.
