Title: Gepids v Huns
Post by: Erpingham on February 19, 2018, 03:05:01 PM
An MA thesis on the Battle of Nedao (https://www.academia.edu/35795188/Collapse_of_the_Hunnic_Empire_Jordanes_Ardaric_and_the_Battle_of_Nedao) which may be of interest to Migration era fans.

That seems interesting. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. :)

(Note to self: this is not an excuse to get a Gepid army.)

Andreas, you correct it is not an excuse for you to get a Gepid army.  You don't need an excuse, you are a wargamer...

In confess I always get a little incredulous when people close-read texts and find all sorts of clever parallels, such as those Mingarelli suggest between Jordanes accounts of the Catalaunian Fields and the Nedao. Did Jordanes really expect a worthwhile proportion of his readers to read obsessively enough to note such?

I also thought the reconstruction of a Hunnic diarchy* seemed a little too neat.

But as said, interesting. 8)

* I thought the word was "dyarchy", but Wiktionary assures me both forms are in use.
