where was the find made? Might be Sassanid or Parthian :-)

Looks mediaeval Islamic to me, for some reason. Partly the shape of the saddle, I think.

Interesting Duncan, have you got any parallels? There are no stirrups, which could make it early pist conquest Arab and they did wear long coats of armour.

However I do find t reminiscent of this Parthian piece

The Palmyrene identification was from the Daily Mail article on Palmyrene artefacts being destroyed by Isis and is a bit generic about the 2000 year old attribution.

Not my area, but that "GI bowler" looks rather like a Boeotian helmet in profile.  A parthian wearing a hand-me-down Seleucid helmet maybe?

Plenty of evidence for Arab mail, which may or may not differ from their neighbours' styles.  Also some for scale, which Nicolle at one point thinks might be characteristically Arab. That cross-hatching could represent almost anything, though.
