where was the find made? Might be Sassanid or Parthian :-)
Looks mediaeval Islamic to me, for some reason. Partly the shape of the saddle, I think.
Spoilsport
Interesting Duncan, have you got any parallels? There are no stirrups, which could make it early pist conquest Arab and they did wear long coats of armour.
However I do find t reminiscent of this Parthian piece
Roy
What Parthian piece, Roy?
The saddle reminds me a bit of http://warfare.meximas.com/6-10/Qasr_al-Hayr_al-Gharbi-Horse_archer.htm

Interesting Roy.
What is the source of the "Palmyrene" identification?
Knew it!

QuoteA sculpture of a knight riding a horse which dates back to the Ummayad period (8th century AD) is pictured in 2009 in a photo courtesy of the Palmyra Antiquities Department. Syria's extraordinary archaeological heritage has fallen prey to the fighting ravaging the country for more than 18 months, with destruction, theft and systematic looting on the rise.
The Palmyrene identification was from the Daily Mail article on Palmyrene artefacts being destroyed by Isis and is a bit generic about the 2000 year old attribution.
The Parthian piece was the well known chap in long coat of plate armour and GI bowler helmet fighting a lion..

If its eighth century Arab it could well be before stirrups, which would make sense. Do Arabs have an indigenous armour style then? or would it be something based on Byzantine or Sassanian style?

Not my area, but that "GI bowler" looks rather like a Boeotian helmet in profile. A parthian wearing a hand-me-down Seleucid helmet maybe?

Plenty of evidence for Arab mail, which may or may not differ from their neighbours' styles. Also some for scale, which Nicolle at one point thinks might be characteristically Arab. That cross-hatching could represent almost anything, though.
