Title: Caesar landed at Pegwell Bay
Post by: Duncan Head on November 29, 2017, 08:57:12 AM
Rescue archaeology turns up a Roman "defensive base" at Ebbsfleet:

Very good: his 'landing correctly at Thanet' is now substantiated. :)

Obviously, the castles, cathedrals and other Roman forts weren't sufficient of a draw :)

When you visit Pegwell Bay, make sure you take in Hugin (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hugin_(longship)).  It's what I remember from my childhood visit.

Went to Kent many times this summer, and there is indeed a wealth of sites to see. The Roman fort remains at Reculver, with a view across the flat reclaimed land that used to be the Wantsum Channel was one that stuck with me.....made more sense of Thanet being called an 'Isle of...'. The Hugin is very well preserved from when it was donated (by the Danes?), but looked a little too 'Disney' to me. Outside of our period, the Manston Spit/Hurricane museum was extremely well stocked with WWII bits....appealed to the aviators in the family  ;) ;)

Thought the two linked reports were of interest, but does anyone else get narked when a journalist reports that the Romans left 'France' and later saw 'England' off the port bow ??

Holly, thanks for highlighting the find.

Half the commenters on the Guardian story, apparently.
