I couldn't resist this story (https://www.medievalists.net/2021/12/african-warrior-women/) from Medievalist.net. Every 11th century Almoravid army needs an elite unit of Moorish female horse archers. What's more, the story is vouched for by a Professor specialising in Medieval Iberia. No shoddy amateur wargamer history here. :)
