whilst researching possible shield and banner devices for my Anglo-Saxons, I came across this dissertation. I thoroughly recommend a read of it if you are at all interested in animal and human artistic motifs used by Anglo-Saxon communities as it also delves into the reasons why and cross examines 2 distinct areas for comparison. The overall examination gives an insight into totemic observances in a possibly localised and community setting
