:) Big, yes, colossal? they are not exactly Moai! :P
Looking at the pictures and the text:- "carved heads (3x the size of a human head) which would have come from sculptures measuring up to 12-15 ft (3.5-4.5m) tall." I agree they are big but they don't look to me as if they have come from statues, they look more architectural.

IIRC, the Romans often made colossal statues of wood, with only bits like heads and hands of stone, so that is a possibility. Certainly, they don't look broken off a statue but rather that they had flat bottoms at chin level to be placed on something.
