They hint at some folklore to explain it and it is tempting to go with that.  Tied legs to stop corpse walking, buried face down (so revenant digs downwards rather than upwards) in a liminal place (remains of an abandoned gateway) so that ghost doesn't attached to a specific place or community. I wonder what the poor girl might have done to warrant it? May all be co-incidence, of course  :)
