No wonder it wasn't draining properly. I have dug out a several tons of concrete from my back garden. The fact that it was reinforced with chicken wire and chain link fencing wire suggests it wasn't Roman.

It all sounds like a bit of an extreme reaction to criticism that one is spending too much time working on the lead pile....  :(
