Possibly pushing it to call it pre-Viking, as that is a rather subjective definition based on when the ASC first records predatory Norsemen in 789 at Portland.  Given they are dating this ship to around 700...  Who knows whether the Scottish isles, for example, had earlier visitors.

Not taking anything away from the find itself of course.

I think the problem is caused by non-archaeologists and historians not realising "Viking Age" is an artificial modern construct rather than a real thing. The idea that the Scandinavians had only just invented ocean going ships before the attack on Lindisfarne makes little sense, if the journalist just thought about it.

Well, "archaeologist and project manager Geir Grønnesby" is partly to blame for his press release, but hey, he is trying to drum up attention for his find.
