Title: Machine Learning Decodes 5,000 Year-Old Cuneiform
Post by: Jon Freitag on November 28, 2023, 03:25:51 PM
AI (machine learning) has been successfully utilized in decoding ancient Mesopotamian cuneiform tablets.
While machine learning has been very useful in decoding 2D scanned images or writing once converted to OCR, cuneiform's 3D writing poses significant hurdles in decoding.  Using 3D scans of the tablets, machine learning neural network algorithms take into account impression depth made by the stylus and distance between symbols and wedges.

Fascinating advancement in using technology to uncover meaning from these ancient writings.
