Carlisle has always considered itself to be the centre of the Empire  8)

Actually it's always had a very anomalous position. By area it is apparently the largest city in England with a population of about 100,000, is ten miles from the border, and was a county town, tucked into one corner of the county with the other major population centres two hours away from it.
Anything could happen in Carlisle  :)

Been through it but never stopped. Probably worth a gander at some point soon

I visited for the first time last year, and saw the exhibition of finds from the bath house site. The giant heads are impressive, as are the gemstones (Roman rings tended to shed their stones in the heat of the baths, apparently).

I'll have to combine a visit with something else. I might have to find a supplier I can visit nearby under the pretext of 'work'

Though be aware the bath house exhibition was temporary. The Tullie Museum does have two permanent Roman galleries, though.

Then I can also recommend looking at the cathedral (partially blown up by the Scots) and the castle. There is a large second hand bookshop by the cathedral, on same street as museum entrance.

Yes the Cathedral doesn't have a nave, which makes it probably unique. It was too damned big anyway so when the Scots blew the nave up they just did without it
The bookshop is well worth a look.
