Certainly there is a policy round here of keeping find spots secret before the local archaeology people announce new finds

FWIW, I once worked with a former SAS officer who was approached by some marine archaeologists to provide security for an underwater site they had discovered.  The conversation indicated that an armed response might occasionally be required to deter interlopers.

He was not into that line of business and so passed them on to some of his former associates who were.
