I think it's a kite-shaped shield, so Byzantine would seem plausible. And the pose with sword on shoulder seems more Byzzie than Roman.
Then is he a Saint? And the crest a halo?

Somehow I'd missed the halo - but yes, I think that's what it is.
A religious memento would make sense. Sort of a pilgrim's badge. Just the sort of thing that one might by as a souvenir or that a soldier might carry as a charm.
