Before this article, I never made the connection that the town name, Merida, was derived from "Emerita".  Was the city, "Merida" in the Yucatán originally set up for retirees too?

Very interesting, Dave.

Although not on the conventional tourist trail I would certainly recommend visiting Merida. I was very impressed with the town and its extensive Roman remains. Unexpectedly, I was most impressed with the then new archaeological museum which is built of brick in the style of a Roman civic basilca. It really gives the visitor the feel for the enormous internal space of these buildings (the only other site I know of giving this is the Aula Palatina, a genuine Roman survival though re-roofed, in Trier).
