Given his uncle was killed by it, and he was an eye witness, I have always tended to assume he had a vague idea when it was...

Whilst upping or downing the numbers for a battle might make some political sense, altering the date of an eruption witnessed by hundreds of people who had survived would be pretty damn stupid.
