Thanks Dave, I enjoyed reading this, odd I had not thought about it map wise, perhaps too much familiarity with the Tony Robinson version we used to play on long journeys.
However-
Quotethe island of Meganisi, which looks just like a trident, albeit curved

Though fascinating, one might question whether the journey can be subject to detailed analysis while ignoring all the fantastical elements.  Even if Homer knew the story that Odysseus had a long and difficult journey home, how much did he try to reflect a detailed itinerary and how much tell a heroic tale?
