Title: Horse Armour in the Medieval Islamic Middle East
Post by: Erpingham on August 19, 2019, 06:22:03 PM
Another serendipitous find (https://journals.openedition.org/cy/3293) which may be of interest to members of the forum.  By David Nicolle and very well illustrated.

Mentioned in passing in http://soa.org.uk/sm/index.php?topic=3592. It's a very useful study.

Quote from: David NicolleThe earliest widespread use of horse armour appears to have been in Inner Asia, perhaps more specifically in Khwarazm.

This claim surprised me. Even assuming armour for chariot horses doesn't count, I thought Neo-Assyrian cavalry horse armour predated anything known from Central Asia?

I can only assume that either he doesn't know that the Assyrian fabric caparisons exist, or else he doesn't regard them as "armour".
