Has anyone any recommendations for books on the Serbian Empire, and one's dealing with their conflicts with the Ottoman's?

Duncan Head

I haven't read it, but http://www.amazon.co.uk/Serbia-Rise-Fall-Medieval-Empire/dp/1850720606/ seems the obvious first choice - only one copy in stock, buy now!

Thanks Duncan, just bought it!

There is another one which is also of interest on Amazon, but not at over £271!-

'The Serbs and Byzantium during the reign of Tsar Stephen Dusan (1331-1355) and his successors' George Christos Soulis (Dumbarton Oaks Library Collection)

abebooks.co.uk have one for £65, which is much better than £271 but still not exactly inexpensive.

Oh dear, my wallet is going to feel lighter even as we speak...!

If there's any money left in the wallet, I've just noticed:
http://www.oxbowbooks.com/oxbow/cross-and-crescent-in-the-balkans.html
Now for only £7.95 - should cover the tail end of the Serbian Empire, I should imagine.

Hi Duncan, I got that book suggestion from Oxbow a little while ago as I noticed it was going cheap in the last Oxbow catalogue as well. It's a bit surprising that it really doesn't go into too much detail with the Serbian/Ottoman conflicts.

I have just taken delivery of that book that was on Abebooks, hope my good lady does not notice the £65 price tag (I could try convincing her it was a bargain compaired to the £271 price on Amazon!!!).

seems to have a good deal on Serbia. Large chunks are on Google books so you can judge the amount of detail. There is a second hand copy on Amazon for around £20.

I've purchased all of the suggested books on the Medieval Serbian's. The book Duncan found is a slim volume which is basically a primer in effect. It glosses over the Battle of Kosovo Pole in 1389AD, and the author mistakenly states the Sultan Murad I led the Ottomans off the battlefield, which was not the case as he was assassinated during the battle by a Serbian nobleman and knight called Miloš Obilić. There are other inconsistances in the book as well. The John V A Fine book is a weighty tome and looks like its going to be a good read. The Soulis book is printed in a difficult to read print unfortunately which I am having some difficulty in reading.

Sorry Adrian, are you saying the Nicolle 'Cross and Crescent in the Balkans' is a slim volume that is more of a primer?

Hi DOug

I should have made it a bit clearer that I was referring to the 'Serbia- 'The Rise And Fall Of A Medieval Empire' by Thomas Durham. I would only recommend it for what is essentially an overview of the Serbian state from 1166AD to 1458AD. The references to people and and places within the main body of text is not always referenced at the end so your not always sure who or what Durham is referencing.

'Cross and Crescent' does not go into the detail of the Serbian/Ottoman conflicts I was expecting, especially the Battle of Kosovo Pole in 1389AD.
