A new article on the Huqoq mosaics includes the Elephant Panel (which we talked about previously in this thread, and discusses whether it represents:

- The legendary meeting of the Jewish high priest with Alexander the Great
- A treaty between Antiochus VII Sidetes and John Hyrcanus
- A Jewish victory over Seleucids under the Maccabees
- The prophet Samuel confronting Saul

See https://magazine.byu.edu/article/tile-tales-from-galilee/

(Also this thread for discussion of a different Huqoq mosaic panel.)

The fact that one is bringing a bull as a sacrificial offering strikes me that it's unlikely to be a Jewish victory, more likely a meeting to arrange a treaty

the men behind the high priests (more priests or temple acolytes?) are drawing their swords but the solders aren't, so perhaps they're preparing to sacrifice the bull

Interesting one

Jodi Magness' team is just at the beginning of clearing this mosaic - expect to see lots more cool stuff published on it this summer.
