"The archaeologists were able to identify this constructed object as an ancient version of an icebox or refrigerator, which then as now was used to store perishable food."

Hmmm.  If they were proper soldiers, I have just one word to offer.  Beer.

Obvious sign of the barbarisation of the Roman army, then.
When I was in Baghdad the best part of two decades ago, a newly promoted and youngish US Army Major arrived to join our team.  The US personnel were all subject to General Order Number One - no booze in an operational theatre.  The senior Yank in our team, a Brigadier General, a Judge Advocate General to boot, in my presence, welcomed the Major, then asked:

"David, how many Brits are there in the UK contingent?"
"I suppose there's about two hundred of us, civ and mil, all told."
"Indeed.  You hear that Major? Two hundred of them.  Yet they have three, THREE, bars serving alcohol. Associate with them after hours at your peril and the peril of your career.  Ditto the Australians."

I was simultaneously offended and quite proud.
