Another excellent find Dave. This is very important in understanding early humans. An interesting nugget in my brain is the problem of getting humans to Australia. For a long time it was puzzling how they got past the Arabian peninsula because of the lack of obvious water stops. However there are fresh water springs just off the coast that fishermen have known about and of course in Ice Ages the water level would have been low enough to put these on land.

There are lots of Neolithic and later sites drowned around the coasts of the world. The Adriatic, Mediterranean and Black Seas are obvious targets but Doggerland and the Irish Sea are others that spring to mind, there must be lots of other places as well.

indeed there are Ian, the Bristol channel/Severn estuary next to where I live has masses of submerged/semi-submerged remains of flood plains where forests and tidal lagoons used to predominate. You can still see the stumps of 10000 year old tree trunks during low tide

You will also find a variety of submerged settlements and other monuments around Jersey and the Scilly Isles, which used to have bigger land areas.  Some of these are later - Neolithic through to Roman IIRC.

I suppose a lot will depend on how quickly the sinking took place and how much erosion has occurred. Trees are visible in a number of places around the shore here as you say, the south half of Britain is continuing its post Ice Age sinking. As a South Wales boy I have only shifted 50 miles south but the same is true this side of the Channel. An example of a loss through erosion would be the fragment of Hill Fort at Bolt Tail near Hope Cove in Devon where there is evidence that there was a large loss of land in last few thousand years. I have just seen while I was typing that Antony has just picked up my other point about the Scillies.

and at Sudbrook promontory fort.....which I used to play football as a lad and when the ball went out of play, it landed on the beach and sometime was lost to sea :)
