I was reminded for some reason of remarks of youngest daughter a few years ago.  She worked in a shop in Stonegate in York centre.  She said that crowds of Roman and Viking re-enactors would be around at various times of the year. I asked her which were worse.  "Romans" she replied.  "They stop in a crowd in front of the shop and make speeches.  Customers can't get in or out for 20 minutes".

My favourite bits of Up Pompeii tend to be Ludicrus Sextus practising his speeches with Lurkio.

This could lead to a new theory on the collapse of the Roman Empire. To many speeches leading to interference in commerce resulting in loss of tax revenue reducing the imperial coffers creating shortages for army pay and the collapse of the legions. (Makes as much sense as some other theories.)

Ludicrus Sextus: Friends, Romans, Countrymen!  Lend me your arches!

Lurkio: That's very good master, but would not "ears" be better?

Ludicrus Sextus: Ears?  Makes no sense!  Arches! I want them to support me.
