An Optio game with a new playtester, Ash, who shows plenty of tactical acumen.

Looking good, Justin.  I enjoyed your battle report.

Ditto (re Jon's comments), a very enjoyable AAR, well illustrated and described. It would be good to hear more about your Optio mechanisms in your reports, although I appreciate that might impact on the narration of the action.

Carl, I agree with your assessment on including some rule mechanism discussion if that is the primary goal.  It might be in Justin's report.

Reading and takeaways from battle reporting are individualized endeavors. Some may prefer a photo-heavy report, some may prefer a more narrative driven approach, some prefer a more rule mechanism based approach, and some don't like them at all!

Every reporting type has its pros and cons.  One constant is that the author can never please all readers.

I read quite a few blog reports (a useful way to find out on others gaming experiences, rules, modelling etc now I have limited access to magazines) and find Justin strikes a nice balance.  Some reports are very detailed, which is great if you interested in the period but not so much otherwise, some are very well illustrated and some are just odd.  Justin hits a good balance, I think.

Ta chaps. I generally divide blog posts between explanations of aspects of the rules and battles where I might mention a rule or two in passing. If anyone wants to know more about how the rules work I'm always happy to pass on a pdf of the ruleset. Only requirement is that you keep it to yourself. It would be nice if you agreed to playtest as well. Just sayin'.
