Yep. Photogrammetry.  I have been investigating that for 3d printing. It is very cool.

There are a number of free programs you can get that will let you experiment with creating a 3d model from a series of photographs. The main challenge is locking the pictures together, so for small objects, you can set up a rotating turntable. Pros will take literally hundreds of keyed pictures to recreate objects and surfaces, and it's being used a lot in conservation and architecture.

If I ever get time away from the painting table I might have to start playing with it, but I already have a steep learning curve with some of the other software I am using.

i can see its a real skill to master but the results are splendid. beyond my skills!
