Battle in medieval art - an example

An interesting article by Richard Abels from 2010 on Cultural Representations of Warfare in the High Middle Ages: The Morgan Picture Bible has surfaced on Medievalists.net.

A good example of not taking medieval art at face value, even if it is some of the most technically accomplished drawing of arms and armour we have.

The comparison of the Wisby wound distribution and that of the Morgan Bible is interesting, though I have to say, I would have caveated it more.  Given the nature of the fighting given in the Morgan Bible, it is always going to be likely that the artist would portray mainly upper body wounds compositionally. A wider range of comparators would have been good too.  Wisby is perhaps unusual in the number of leg injuries compared with other sites, but then we have few large scale battle graves to compare.
