I can't get to BBC currently, but this would be against the long time assumption of further north and moving South into the middle east cultures.

Right BBC back up and Wow! That is a significant time back from previous work. Whilst many developments can easily be envisaged as happening in multiple places iron is really not at all easy to extract or work as temperatures needed are very high so it's less easy to envisage lots of different groups trying out the necessary work as a speculative venture.
