Incidentally, while looking for shield colour stuff, I spotted this.



Later and Polish but quite rare survival of shield painting, especially as this is an excavated example.

Thanks Dave.  May be a bit old but still frequently quoted a standard work.

This British Museum article may be of interest as it reconstructs the metalwork and strapping on shields and shows a couple of patterns which could be reproduced as gilt metals work on a plain ground .
