While looking at something else, I noted Bret Deveraux had recently compared historical and Hollywood shieldwall fighting.  In fact, this is mostly about Romans and Macedonians, not your good old Vikings but he is a classicist

I commented on his blog, but there are few things Bret gets wrong abut hoplites when trying to fit all shield walls into one barrel. Somethings that hold true for archaic hoplites don't hold true for classical hoplites.
