Title: Leather scale armour from Xinjiang - maybe Assyrian???
Post by: Duncan Head on December 09, 2021, 07:22:52 PM
A poster on the dbmmlist linked to the following:
https://phys.org/news/2021-12-year-old-leather-armor-technology-antiquity.html

The original article is available at:

This is a fascinating find, though I find the direct connection to Assyria weak in the extreme.

Here is Sean Manning's take (https://www.bookandsword.com/2021/12/11/the-scale-armour-from-yanghai/) on the report.  He isn't impressed by the Assyrian speculation either.

Nor is Nigel Tallis, who's talked about it briefly on the dbmmlist.

Thanks for the link to Sean's piece, it's very interesting.

When I read the article, I was skeptical too.  Making a tenuous link to Assyria using this artifact and an artifact in the MET of unknown provenance seemed a bit of a leap of faith to me.
