Jeremy Black (ed) : Cavalry Warfare From Ancient Times to Today

A free downloadable 500 page book in PDF.  Six chapters from our period.  Some well-known authors scattered throughout and a wide geography of examples. I've only read one article so far (by Cliff Rogers on Italian battles of 11th & 12th centuries) but look forward to looking at more.

Digging mud - one of the least pleasant archaeological processes and also one of the most useless (completely destroys the layers of stratigraphy).  This must be desperate rescue stuff.

Ancient and Medieval History / Re: Pompeii's survivors

For those unable to watch the series, it is worth it when it arrives at your territory.  This episode points out surviving Pompeii depended a lot on timing (if you went early enough to the countryside or were away on business and decided against returning until the eruption had settled down) and also the direction you went (North past Vesuvius, IIRC, was the correct choice).
