This is an interesting article with lots of fascinating detail, but in a sense it is old hat.  Ever since scientific methods were developed they have been applied to archaeology and historical evidence, expanding our understanding of artifacts and their context and helping to enrich our understanding of history.  So, an extending science of history, rather than a new one?
