Combat is decided before throwing a dice for the general/commander, so my army routed just before the general was killed. I suppose you could interpret it as each army had enough at its losses and disengaged from battle to bury its dead and claim it had really won.

Probably a good point to mention the excellent "Death of Stalin" film - a comedy that probably gave you a better feel for the subject than any serious film would.
