just a query to ask if anyone can recommend any books, articles, army information etc on the Merovingian Franks
There is a little in Ian Heath's WRG Armies of the Dark Ages - see

http://warfare.gq/WRG/Dark_Ages-52-53-Merovingian_Cavalry-7-8C.htm
Otherwise there's Bachrach's Merovingian Military Organization (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Merovingian-Military-Organization-481-751-Bachrach/dp/0816606218/) as a starting point/

thanks Duncan, I'd forgotten about Heath. The book by Bachrach looks interesting though a bit pricey for me
Hi Dave
I don't know if this adds https://weaponsandwarfare.com/2020/08/22/frankish-military-organization-and-siege-logistics-in-the-6th-century/
but interestingly he refers to Halsall regarding army size. I fits with my memory of his book having mainly very low level detail (what was required to bring to muster) or high level: y thousand troops. And not necessarily the bit between.

Guy Halsall's "Warfare and Society in the Barbarian West 450-900" may be useful - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Warfare-Society-Barbarian-450-900-History/dp/0415239400
thanks both, will look at that
