Title: Roman Late Republican weapons relief from central Italy
Post by: Duncan Head on September 04, 2021, 12:07:59 PM
See the blog entry at  https://mennytaika.blogspot.com/2021/06/a-new-roman-weapons-relief-found-in.html

I found this mentioned in the latest Ancient Warfare (XV-1). That magazine referred to the "Past Tense" blog; "Mennyt aika" is apparently Finnish for "past tense", but I only discovered this after being confused by the actual https://pasttenseblog.wordpress.com/, which is about London radical history. But anyway...

A very interesting relief presented with an extensive commentary.

Interesting how the shields with crescent moons at the ends are similar to designs of auxiliary shields on Trajan's Column.

There's at least one shield with crescents on the Arch of Orange, also supposedly a Celtic trophy. And some of the circles on the shields here remind me of the wreaths on auxiliary shields. Presumably the auxiliary patterns are at least in part of Celtic inspiration.
