Certainly intriguing. I suspect the training of the AI would be a bit specialist, otherwise it'll be forever finding cat pictures hidden in the data  ;)

According to the article, if you find some old slag lying around in the desert you'll get a load of archeologists asking you for the location.

Down in the Empty Quarter, it is not just copper slag that can be readily found.  In certain places there are significant accumulations of stone arrow heads and other neolithic implements just lying around on the surface.  These are all quite small and one needs to get one's eye in to spot them.  Not sure that an AI trained on satellite photos is going to be that useful for this type of exercise.

Incidentally, the Empty Quarter can have a surprising amount of human activity taking place at certain times.  Groups of eccentric visitors described to me how they set up camp on a small rise.  As dusk fell, they could see the Saudi security forces on another rise close by, and the Yemenis on yet another.  In between, sundry smugglers plied their trade...
