I came across this while looking for something on Gallic horse colours for Andreas

https://www.labrujulaverde.com/en/2024/05/surprising-burial-of-28-horses-that-died-in-a-battle-of-the-gallic-wars-forgotten-by-history-is-found/

It's possible we have already noted this (there was a shorter report in the Guardian a few days later) but, if not, maybe interesting. Battle casualties or horse sacrifices?

Anyway, these are very much what we would refer to as ponies.  I, obviously taken in by some dubious history, thought the Gauls had big horses as opposed to the Britons who had ponies.  Obviously not.

At 12 hands they're small ponies indeed. A comment I saw was "A 13 hand horse (that's around 52 inches tall at the shoulder) is typically suited for smaller adults or teenagers"

Could these have been chariot horses?
