Ah, so that's what happened to my figures... 

BBC news item that might be of interest to those wondering how long ago people started navigating out of sight of land.

Though an alternative explanation might be that the vessel foundered in heavy seas and wind having been blown out to sea. Just because the wreck is out of sight of land is no guarantee that the poor devils aboard were happy navigating out of sight of land... especially without any meaningful means of maintaining way against a strong headwind.
