A classic match up.
Germans with 13 warband units (some veteran) all unarmoured.
Romans with 7 cohorts plus some auxiliaries and cavalry. Loads of armour and  good quality legionaries.

Germans chose to attack.
The centre of the German army was full of warband units champing at the bit to  "get to it".
The Germans used a battle tactic to push forward their centre at higher speed.
The German left flank also pushed up at a pace.
The German right flank just held off.

The Romans had little scenery to help them. They did have a gentle hill on their right flank.
The Romans pushed forward with very well stacked zones. Armoured with veteran and elite units.

There were three big fights in the battle centre (zone versus zone).

Fight number 1. Germans hit the Roman battle line. 16D6 (German)versus 11D6. A lot of D6. Germans punched the romans back but the Roman losses were light due to their armour saves. However the German zone used a "fury" battle tactic which added 3 more casualty markers to the Romans. More casualty markers =more morale.

Fight number 2. Germans hit the Roman battle line again. 12D6 versus 9D6. Germans got smashed (aargh!).
Having no armour the aftermath was grim. Only the presence of German veterans kept the line fighting.

Fight number 3. Germans hit the Roman right flank. 12D6 versus 7D6. Horrible disaster for the Germans.
The Germans re formed but were upset.

At this point the two armies were stood off but both had a disrupted (uneven) battle line.

Plenty more bish bash bosh but the Germans suffered more. The Romans assaulted in a unified manner. Very clever.

Germans occupied the two flanks but with very weak strengths.

The Game needed after a total of 10 turns (5 each).
The Romans won because they killed a few more Germans than their own losses, but mainly because they held their battle line and even pushed it forward a bit.
The Roman player was well organised with a good battle plan.
The German player got a bit too wild and attacked at too many  zones?

The Germans lost because their initial  punch ins did not kill enough Romans.

The Romans had one of their two generals killed.

Shooting casualties were light as both sides had plenty of skirmishers but they were busy woking in the fight zones.

The Germans needed to break a hole in the Roman line but poor D6 rolling let them down (excuse).

Game lasted 2 hours from arrival to pack up.
The German army had 55 bases of troops.
The Roman army had 43 bases of troops.

Next game will be successors versus ancient Egyptians. A bit crazy but the men want to try out  some extremes.
