Ancient roman ruins won't stop new tunnel

This reminds me of all the fuss over that section of the A303 that goes past Stonehenge.  For those who have never travelled this route, it is a major arterial road connecting London with the southwest of England.  Most of its length is good quality dual carriageway, but the stretch around Stonehenge has not changed much since prehistoric times and is subject to stupendous traffic queues at peak times or throughout the summer.  The authorities have been endeavouring to improve the road for almost as long as the monument has stood there, only to have objections by everyone from UNESCO to the humble neighbourhood treehugger claiming that four lanes of black top would ruin for eternity a view over largely featureless grassland that, at any one time, has half the British Army driving its tanks across it.  Weary of the interminable whingeing, it was finally proposed to spend an awesome sum of money to bury the whole thing 30 feet underground in a tunnel.  They have even employed over 100 archaeologists to look at anything they dig up. Who could possibly object to such a perfect, if horrendously expensive, solution?  Yet can you believe it, the nimbies and uncaring luddites who never have to sit for hours in the traffic are still arguing!

Bah!  I think the Mayor of Rome is right - bulldoze the lot!
