Indeed, the Guelph/Ghibbeline conflict is a fascinating one.  Runciman's book on the Sicilian Vespers deals with quite a lot of it.  The other book I found interesting on struggles between the Church and various temporal distractions is E.R. Chamberlin The Bad Popes.

For overseas readers, Dave is referencing the famed comic creation Hyacinth Bucket (pronounced Bouquet). Hyacinth was the star of Keeping Up Appearances, a woman of ordinary origins who had pretensions and was a terrible snob. My mother rather wickedly said Hyacinth was based on her older sister.
