Battle Reports / Re: Second Battle of Soissons ...
Last post by Jon Freitag - Today at 06:24:52 PM
In the past, I experimented using this approach to battle reporting with text embedded within game photos.  My experience is that this loses a lot of flexibility and increases the risk of introducing typos into the corpus.  I tend to go back and edit the text post-publication which is much more difficult with text embedded into a graphic.  If this approach works for you then that it is what matters.  I found the new format difficult to read since both graphic and text were quite small.  Embedding a lot of text into a graphic image tends to lose resolution in the conversion with the text looking a bit choppy to my eyes.  Perhaps resolution is better on a phone but suffers on my laptop.

The perfect opportunity to listen to your favourite version - I know you like a ballad :)  With your knowledge of French you'll soon pick out something.
Sur le pont de Soissons
On y lance on y lance
Sur le pont de Soissons
On y lance a tout le monde....

Some context.

I agree.

I don't know. What do you suggest?

Quote from: Erpingham on Today at 05:27:03 PMI think you're doing a good job showing counters on a 3D dressed table can deliver a pleasing effect  but am worrying a bit about the cubes overshadowing the counters.  Maybe try jacking the counters up with more card or thin ply so relative heights are closer?
Oh, never mind the counters. They're just fill-ins for miniatures I don't have. The cubes seem discrete enough when miniatures are used, at least nobody has yet complained about them.

I'm tinkering with another way of formatting AARs that gets around Blogger's irritating quirk of displaying images in very low-res format unless you select them - which gets them away from the accompanying text. The formatting is aimed at smartphones though it works fine for PCs. Let me know if it works for you. Battle report here.

In what is probably the nearest you will get to a historical match up by me  ;D ...

...my Greeks from Thebes took on a mid-western Persian satrapy. Perhaps it wasn't that historically accurate after all, but a fun and close battle.

Short report below and longer report for those wanting the full excitement on my website.

Army Research / Re: Long camel swords

Quote from: DBS on Today at 06:21:31 AMNot entirely clear why poke with a long sword, rather than a cheaper spear, other than prestige and perhaps less likely to break or get too embedded in an enemy?

Well, in terms of the Renaissance estocs and Polish equivalents, you are looking at something very sharp and stiff. So I think you have the answer - something robust that will punch through armour without breaking or bending. I suspect mail and scale armour would be more vulnerable than the plate armours an estoc was for. Do we know more about the properties of these long Partian/Sassanian swords?

A little late replying. However, there are a few photos of my Malay on my Ancients DBA site. They are from the Grumpy range, with the exception of the artillery models which are from Essex, though with Grumpy crews. Hopefully it is of some use.
